Manning two offshore VTS projects simultaneously is rare, but Redwise DCP made it happen
In the ever-changing world of offshore operations, safety and coordination are key. Redwise DCP BV specializes in providing Offshore Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) operators whose primary task is to ensure the safety of navigation and operations outside the VTS areas governed by the national authorities. This is mainly at- or near traffic lanes during drilling operations, seismic surveys, salvage operations, and when mandated by operating licenses.
A notable example of this was Redwise’s support during the two-year construction period of the Norther wind farm, located just outside the Belgian ports of Zeebrugge and Oostende. Our Offshore VTS operators helped guide and inform commercial shipping, fishing vessels, and yachts navigating through the project area.
Oil and Gas related projects are generally only a few weeks per annum, hence it’s very rare to have two offshore VTS projects running simultaneously—but that’s exactly what happened in March and April 2025.
Redwise-DCP bv provided offshore VTS services on the rigs Swift 10 and Valaris 123, both located in the North Sea and involved in well decommissioning. These operations present unique challenges, when it comes to monitoring and informing surrounding vessel traffic about the rig positions and ensuring a safe passing distance. Apart from the two Deep Sea Pilots on each platform, Redwise organised on behalf of the oil companies the equipment necessary to conduct this work for both rigs: ARPA radars, VHF’s, scanners mounted on the rig to avoid blind spots, mobile Starlink sets, additional AIS, etc.
A good example is shown in the picture below, where an approaching bulker needed to alters course to safely pass Swift 10 while transiting in the traffic zones and their crossings.
A big thank you to the entire pilotage team for making it possible to fully men these two projects at once 24/7,— a truly unique achievement!
The service is carried out by fully licenced Deep Sea Pilots mandated by the Dutch authorities, with additional VTS credentials and training.
