GEM STAR 2
GEM STAR 2

Recently we delivered a vessel that is fully involved in life line service. She is now called GEM STAR 2 IMO nr. 7607364 and sailing between the main island and smaller islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines with an occasional trip to St. Lucia.
She is an old lady built as the TRUSTNA for Fjord1 in 1977 and sold in 2016 to Spain to continue her life on the Ibiza to Formentera shuttle as: CRISTOBAL COLON DE IBIZA on behalf of Spanish FORMENTERA Shipping Lines where she did several daily trips.

We got into contact with her new Owners in May 2019 when they were inspecting the vessel in Spain and they are a truly enjoyable and nice couple, the family deRoche, with Augustine deRoche still working as engineer and his wife Anne deRoche running the affairs. When I met them and inspected the vessel in Burriana, a lovely small port just North of Valencia, the vessel proved to be in an excellent state of maintenance. For any real professional you could see strait away that neither Fjord1 nor Formentera Shippinglines had saved a penny on maintenance and that she was very well built back in 1977 by VOLDNES SKIPSVERFT A/S. Credit / Chapeau to all parties involved. A nice “little” ferry that is a joy to sail on.

Redwise Maritime Services BV was contracted by the buyers conduct the delivery voyage to Kingstown, St. Vincent & the Grenadines to replace the ferry Gem Star that had suffered damages from an onboard fire. Although the vessel was in excellent condition, the fact that she had been moved from DNV-GL to classification with the Spanish national register, necessitated to bring her back in international class for the voyage, and future trade. Apart from this Redwise arranged for H&M as well as P&I insurance, the entire crew of predominantly Redwise employed key personnel, fuel, ISM and ISPS certification on a lumpsum basis. The crew consisted of our Dutch: master, Ch.Officer and Ch. Engineer, together with a Latvian engineer and Ukrainian cook, supported by an excellent Ghanese motorman / GP from sellers who had been working on the vessel for the past 3 years and was engaged by the buyers.

The voyage itself was uneventful with a bunker call at Tenerife, which you could expect from a vessel in such an excellent condition, whereas the reception of the vessel and Redwise crew was exceptional.

The vessel does provide the life line support for the smaller Grenadines islands moving anything from building materials to food supplies and people. On a rare occasion she travels to St. Lucia for school outings and sporting events. She is an upgrade from the former Gem Star with a substantial larger capacity.

It was a real pleasure to work with people that have mutual respect and become friends over the cause of a contract, valuing each other’s input and contribution.
